Ms. CAiro's Third Grade
This morning, Ms. Papke and I combined our classes for a buddy reading experience that I only wish words could explain :) Half of my students went to her room, and half of her students came to me. In both classrooms, kinders had the opportunities to read leveled books to the second graders, and the second graders had the opportunities to be a "teacher", supporting and guiding the little ones as they read. Listening to my students share decoding strategies for tricky words, hearing words of encouragement when the kinders stumbled over a word, and seeing the confidence on their faces when they realized that they were helping another child was absolutely heartwarming. Today I was reminded how special of a place Seaside is. We have the opportunity to become reading buddies with another class, lay on the floor and pillows while we work together, and experience the true joy of accomplishment (and reading!). I watched reading come alive and confidence overflow the classroom. I listened to laughter, kind words, After our buddy reading session, we had a little meeting on the rug, complete with snack. Every single child expressed that they LOVED reading with the younger children, and can't wait to continue reading with them again soon. They complimented their buddies and also had ideas for next time, and how they could help the specific struggles of their buddy. They did this all on their own. Moments like this are why I became a teacher in the first place. I am a happy teacher today; eyes filled with tears of joy and all!! (Sorry that not all of the children are pictured--some were in Ms. Papke's room! These photos do NOT encompass the happiness that filled the classroom today, but I had to share anyway!)

As promised, here's an article shedding some light on the nine year change! Though we don't have any nine year olds in our class, I think many parents will find this comforting to know you are not alone with some of the struggles you are experiencing!
Thank you for sharing this article a few weeks ago, Katrina Hall!! http://www.waldorfinthehome.org/2012/02/parenting_the_nine_year_old_1.html Children explore measurement of various objects within the classroom using rulers! I apologize for not posting any surfing pictures thus far this beach rotation! Here's a gallery of all the photos I have taken from our first surf session through today, May 19th! Thank you to all the special grandparents and special friends who came to school on Friday to experience the morning with your student. The children absolutely loved sharing their day with you, and their joy was so apparent. I wish I had taken more pictures, but I was too busy enjoying the happiness and pure joy that filled the room. Thank you to everyone who helped make Grandparents Day so special <3 Very thankful for the lovely baking volunteers we have had in the past few weeks! We have tried our hand at baking bread and cookies...I think we all preferred the cookies! We made "Classic Clara Cookies" to celebrate the friendship among Clara and her peers. We are sure going to miss her!!! Last Monday, we had the opportunity to spend the entire day in the outdoor classroom. Though it wasn't super sunny, we enjoyed the cooler weather! We learned about nouns (and had some riveting conversations about the difference between common and proper nouns), made rain gauges, and the children created bug homes for little critters who joined in on our learning(: Rain GaugesCritter HomesIf you look carefully, you can see the names of the little critters, their bookshelves, play areas, and beds. My favorite is the little ladybug all tucked in under a leaf <3 Love these little minds. |
