Have you seen our garden recently? Although our lima bean plants have been eaten by caterpillars, the rest seem to be growing well! We even found a baby strawberry(: The children spent Thursday afternoon making garden observations, spreading a natural bug repellent (thanks to Ava's mom!), pulling weeds, and removing caterpillars from our plants(; Finn planted a few starfruit seeds that he rescued from his snack! The children experimented with mixing red and yellow paints to create math mats. These mats (after they are laminated) will give the children a visual space in front of them to complete their math activities using manipulatives! Recently we read The Baby Sister by Tomie dePaola. The children created mind movies retelling the story! They LOVED this activity (they also LOVED that I let them stand on the chairs for the picture..ha!) As I am sure you are aware by now, we created scarecrows (that greatly resemble kittens) for our garden last week! Thank you to everyone who donated supplies for our scarecrows, and those who came to help with their construction (: Apologies that it has taken me SO long to post these pictures! Working in groups, the children were to explore their pumpkin! They were to estimate and measure the height and circumference of their pumpkins. They estimated and counted the number of lines on the pumpkin. After we cut the top off of the pumpkin, they estimated the number of seeds. Counting the seeds in groups of ten, they discovered that pumpkins hold upwards of 300 seeds! It soon became a contest of which group’s pumpkin had the most seeds. After our pumpkin investigations, the children were given the opportunity to carve pumpkins using cookie cutters and hammers! This was so amazing. We have future engineers in our second grade class, that’s for sure. Katie Lancelot also brought in an amazing pumpkin seed recipe, so we had the chance to eat our baked seeds after we carved out our pumpkins! YUM! Thank you to everyone who came to volunteer, donated pumpkins, cookie cutters, hammers, baking supplies, etc. We wouldn’t have the opportunity to do fun activities like this if it weren’t for you! Just a few of the second grade standards that were met through our Halloween activities: SCIENCE SC.2.N.1.5 Distinguish between empirical observation (what you see, hear, feel, smell, or taste) and ideas or inferences (what you think).
