Ms. CAiro's Third Grade
Just a sneak peak into what our testing environment looked like last week...did you even know we took our first math assessment? The children did wonderfully!
Assessments are simply a way to gauge what children have mastered, and what needs to be retaught-that's it!!

Last week we talked about why it is SO important to know our math facts, and the importance of efficient math strategies!
In the picture above, I was trying to solve the math problem 80-4 using my fingers, when I realized I didn't have that many fingers! Thankfully, Josh, Emma, Metta, and Margot offered up their fingers and toes for the cause. We can think of 80-4 as a basic ten fact (10-4) and know that 70 is "ten" less than 80. The children were spouting out answers to equations with large numbers left and right (90-5, 60-6, etc.) using basic tens facts for the rest of the day! Your children are going to have such a deep understanding of number sense at the end of the year!!! PS- About two minutes after we had our shoes off and feet on the table, Ms. Sanders came in with very special visitors on campus at Seaside...haha! She loved hearing that story later in the afternoon. I love second grade! It's too bad they missed this moment!!! Before the children interviewed someone special at home last weekend, they interviewed their peers in class! Here are some pictures of them practicing positive interviewing behaviors in class! Using our fine motor skills, we cut out a picture of Stillwater the Panda! The main character in our book of the month, Zen Shorts! If you would like to donate to our class fall/outdoor basket for the silent auction on September 24th, 2015 at The Pier Cantina in Jax Beach, you can do so at this link:
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4faba72ea3fc1-seaside Please send all items in by this Friday, September 18th. Bug spray Can you help make an all-natural bug-spray for our class? The recipe given to be from the school is as follows: -1 cup distilled white vinegar -1/2 cup water 20 drops peppermint essential oil I have a small aluminum bottle you can use--the essential oils will eat away at a plastic bottle! You can also add other essential oil scents if you'd like as well. Rain coat hooks I have awesome hooks to hang the children's rain coats on, but I cannot find nails/screws to hang them with! The hooks are very thick, but not too heavy.
Is there anyone handy that can take a look at what I have, and come hang hooks for us? Fun was had by all yesterday during our first surfing session of the year! Our newest surfer Emma turned out to be a professional, and our returning surfers have obviously been practicing all summer...whoa! Everyone was awesome! If you were taking pictures at the beach yesterday and you have anything to add, please send me an email and I will be happy to update the post! I did my best to get pictures of everyone, but I know I missed some kiddos. I also switched from my camera to my phone halfway through and I'm glad I did...nothing saved on my camera! So I lost a lot of pictures ): Sorry!! I will get all of the children next week! Thanks to Mrs. Pinchot, the children are actively participating in a new strategy I learned this week called Tea Party! The children are discussing a book (our book of the month, Zen Shorts) and coming up with predictions for the story. What a great pre-reading strategy! To learn more about what this Tea Party was all about, come to our Parent Education night this Thursday, September 10th at 6:30! Wednesday afternoon, the absolutely wonderful handwork angel/teacher Ms. Kessler and our amazing parent volunteer Ginny Aures came to our class. We learned how to use an embroidery hoop and how to sew a felt shape to a pencil case using a basic cross-stitch! We practiced our fine motor skills, counted stitches, and experienced the joy of handwork - and realized just how simple it can be with the right teacher! THANK YOU MS. KESSLER!! We can't wait to see you again soon! |
