What a better way to end our Monday than yoga on the beach. At the end of the yoga class, Ms. Walker let the children ring her bowl. They each had to share something they are grateful for...their answers were so thoughtful. Please ask your children what they shared today! Wonderful pictures of family learning taking place on the beach today! I would like to start with a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the parents who volunteered today at the beach. Thank you for helping us keep the children safe! I appreciate you! I highly encourage everyone to try and come out to the beach to watch the children surf-even if it's only for a few minutes(: It's nothing short of amazing! There are a ton of pictures in the slideshows-bare with me! The children are LOVING our author study on Tomie dePaola! He is such a talented author and illustrator.
Today we read Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs. After reading, the children worked in teams to sequence 6 main events that happened in the story. They did a great job working together and discussing the correct order of story events! I hope your children told you about the marshmallow challenge we completed on Friday! The children were given one yard of string, one yard of tape, 20 sticks of spaghetti, and one regular sized marshmallow. The object: Children were to work together to create the tallest structure that can stand alone for 10 seconds (no hands!). The catch is that the structure needed to hold a marshmallow on the top! They had 18 minutes to complete this task. The winning team was Alana, Gunner, Jah'stasha, and Peyton! They did an awesome job. Their structure measured in at 16 inches tall. WAY TO GO! This activity gave the children the opportunity to work together, make mistakes, and learn from their mistakes. EVERY SINGLE CHILD contributed wonderful, out-of-the-box ideas for creating their team's structure. I have a class full of future engineers(: If this picture of a worm squirming all over Finn's shirt doesn't capture the essence of Seaside, I don't know what will!
After discussing the life cycle of a seed, the purpose of the stem, leaves, and flowers of plants...we FINALLY got our hands dirty in the garden! Thank you to all of the families who have donated seeds, plants, and all other garden-related supplies!!!! The children LOVED being in the garden.
Enjoy some miscellaneous pictures of the cutest second graders around! Gabrielle, Eden, and Cassidey enjoy their recess time, Peyton and Isaac are ghost hunters, Finn teaches calendar math, and the children relax and listen to Mr. Vogel read aloud!
